E. VAIL CHURCH, 172 E ...st St., New York 22, earlier known for his flying model business, soloed George F. Russell's Curtiss at the military camp grounds at Niantic, Conn., in 1911, followed by other flights in September in on of his own planes built for a customer. Other planes followed, including one of the first seaplanes. Built under the auspices of Hudson Maxim, this was flown off the latter's estate on Lake Hopatcong, N. J. It was powered by a Kirkham engine. In World War I he was in charge of experimental work at the Curtiss Garden City plant.
