COGSWELL & SIGNAL CORP STUDENTS - 1916
Collection of James Livingston, 8-30-04

Hello Mr. Cooper, I have obtained an 8" x 10" ambrotype photo on glass that I think is early aviation with possibly one of the Early Birds instructors standing in front of a Curtiss plane with military on each side of him. Iam not an aviation expert but I have done a little research on this piece and I think the photo is taken from a Curtiss instruction base in Virginia, maybe Newport News around 1915 -1917. I am very insterested in knowing what I have and would appreciate your advice or opinion on this early image.
Thanks for your time.
James Livingston
Editor's Note: It appears that the aviator in the picture may well be Stewart Cogswell. The resemblance in persuasive and the timing of the event is feasable. I have tried to identify the student pilots, without success. If any of you recognize them, please contact me. Also, if you recognize the aeroplane, please let us know.
