Frey, in flight, on monoplane Morane. Collection of Dario Mazzalupi, 1-7-07 Translation courtesy of Giovanni Giorgetti |
via email from Dario Mazzalupi, 1-2-07 Translation courtesy of Giovanni Giorgetti June 12, 1911, Monday at 9.35. Frey took off from Rome, but was lost in the fog. He crashed at Macchia Grossa of Ronciglione near Viterbo. "In the June 13, 1911 wire sent to Turin by the Ronciglione (Viterbo) mayor we read: We believe the very dense fog was the cause of the crash, he suffered a fracture of the right arm, left leg, lower jaw. He was sent to our hospital, he is in fair terms, satisfactory spirits,. Your tender word, your wish will be reported him - the Mayor" In the June 21, 1911 letter the public assistance president of Ronciglione (Viterbo) thanks the Ronciglione mayor: "In the name of the association which I have the honour to preside I thanks you Mr Mayor of this esteemed municipal administration for the approval vote which you have deigned to concede our association for the rescue given to the aviator FREY ............. Signed the president Tito Tecchi" The memory of this event is remembered by the entitling of a street of Ronciglione to the courageous pilot "André Frey". A couple of old postcards are in existence to remember the event: One is this: But a mistake there is in fact the town isn't Viterbo but Ronciglione. The other is attached. |
