and the Descendants of Andrew Ward via email from Brian Ginnard, 11-8-04 I am writing in response to a web site regarding the Lafayette Escadrille. In particular one of it's early members, Edward Hinkle. Several years ago when cleaning out a old barn, I came across an original hand lettered certificate from the French government recognizing Mr. Hinkle for his volunteer services in the French Aviation. The certificate is dated, numbered, signed and sealed. Along with the certificate, I also found a certificate of membership identifying Mr. Hinkle as a member in the "Association of Descendants of Andrew Ward". It's dated 1906. Your the first one I have found to talk to about this. I am not a history buff and I wondered if you would get back in touch with me to help me understand the importance of these documents. Thanks for your time, Brian Ginnard |

via email from Brian Ginnard, 11-9-04 Thanks for the quick reply. I also had a difficult time locating information about Mr. Hinkle. I even emailed the Lafayette Flying Corp. Memorial in France and the email was returned as undeliverable. What I would like to do with these items is to, as you suggest, use them as a starting point to learn more about this man and the history that surrounds him. If there is interest in these items from others, then I would probably sell them to a collector so that they can be preserved and shared with others in a proper way. As you look at the photos, there is one thing I would like to point out and ask your opinion. On the LFC document, you will notice that the name is Edward J. Hinkle not F. Do you think it is possible that the author of this paper made a mistake and used the middle initial J instead of F? If you look at the other document (DAW), the name is spelled out completely Edward Foote Hinkle. The F could be mistaken as a J. Anyway...let me know what you think.
