HISTORY OF THE BADGE
Via email from Stephen French, 3-4-04
Hello Ralph,
I was at an arms fair in the UK,and I asked a dealer if he had any WW1 pilot badges. He said he didn't !! An old boy of about 92 standing next to me tugged my shirt and said, "I've got a pilots badge ,World War 1, that you would like...I am not selling it but I will send you a picture." Rather than hurt the old man's feelings, I thanked him and said, "That would be really nice." I passed on my address and thought nothing more of it. Two weeks later photos arrived !! I was amazed !! I phoned him up and said how stunning the badge was...I also added I would love to buy it if he ever wanted to part with it .
The deal was set at 250 !! but no, he then said, "I will send it to you to look at ..only then send me the money." True to his word, the badge arrived and I despatched the money...
The badge has St Petersburg hallmarks and dates to 1917, + a very rare award.
Kindest regards
Steve
