November 1926, the most famous Italian test pilot of the age, Mario de Bernardi, gained at Norfolk a phase of the international contest of speed for seaplanes devised in the 1912 from the pioneer and French great magnate Jacques Schneider and that from him taken the name of Schneider Trophy. >From that day Mario de Bernardi, in my intimate deepest, in my inexpert but burning mind of eighteen-year-old, became an idol. A idol to honor and, just in case, to imitate...
The enterprises of my then idol (who with the passing of time became the Italian test pilot more eclectic and versatile of all times) followed without pause: in 1928 he exceeded the 500 Km/h on a seaplane; in 1931 he won at Cleveland the contests of high acrobatics; in 1934 he carried out raid Milan - Moscow non stop, in 1940 tested the first Italian jet plane.... De Bernardi knew to distinguish himself also in front of the dead: to die well is difficult, but he did it with dignity and in legendary way. As the friend Evangelisti has rightly written he lived and disappeared in the myth and his dead can be compared to that of a Homeric hero....
General S.A. Silvio De Giorgio
