1924 Souvenir Program from the International Air Races

"The Oakwood library, (near Dayton Ohio), has a reprint of a 1924 Souvenir program from the International Air Races.... it doesn't mention who reprinted it or when, which I thought was a bit odd.... There's one page, (page 30), that has a small photo of Walter Lees wearing the same goggles and flight suit as in one of the photos on your web pages."

PERRY HUTTON

Dayton, Ohio, October 3, 1924

Perry Hutton, in a Laird Commercial plane, started the day by turning in high average speed for the first lap of the N.C.R. trophy race, the first event on the day's program. For a time he looked a likely winner of the race, but Lees, the winner, made a big gain in the sedone lap, nearly approching Hutton's 90.3 with his 89.9, and then passed the first lap winner in the third, 93.4 to 91.6. Hutton was unabgle to regain his lead, and finished second.

HOBO KING IS
HERE TO 'MIT'
WALTER LEES

Dayton Daily News,
Dayton, Ohio, October 3, 1924
Transcribed by Steve Koons, 1-20-05
Jeff Davis, "King of Hoboes" made a special trip to Dayton Friday from Cincinnati.
He read in a newspaper Thursday that Walter Lees won the N.C.R. trophy race at Wright field Thursday.
And Lees is the pilot who took him for an airplane ride at Atlantic City in 1919. The trip marked the first time a hobo ever went up in airplane, Davis says.
Davis hurried to Wright field immediately after his arrival to congratulate Lees on his achievement.
"Dayton is better decorated for the air races than I have ever seen a city "dolled up" for a big occasion," Davis remarked.
He has just returned from a trip to Honolulu.
