Oh yes, there is a German lady Aviatrix on board – she is going across to buy a flying machine and goes back again at full contracts in America for two years – you will read about her in the papers and know I have met her – Miss Lagler.*

Bozena Langlerova

*Besse’s “German” aviatrix was actually Czech. Her name was Bozena Laglerova. She lived from 1888 – 1941. She was born in Prague and was listed as both Austrian or Czech – the reason being Prague was part of the Austro – Hungarian Empire until 1918, when Czechoslovakia was formed as an independent nation.

In Germany, she flew under the name of Lagler and she was Hans Grade’s first female student at Bork. She began her training there in Spring of 1911. Not long after she was seriously injured in a plane crash, but recovered and returned to the skies.

She became the first woman licensed by the Austrian Aero Club, and was the second woman licensed by the Germans.
