BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
via email from Eduardo Sigaud, 11-9-05
João Busse was the first aviator born in the State of Paraná. He was a police officer and had to go to São Paulo to complete his flight training. He hoped to go back to Curitiba in great style. Two friends gave a Caudron GIII to him to make the flight. Busse and his mechanic planned to begin the flight in 1921, but his mechanic caught a cold because the wind and had to stay in the hospital. Another mechanic arrived, but couldn't resolve the engine problems. (LeRhone 80Hp). (It might have been the gas. Obtaining suitable gasoline for aircraft was a big problem in Brazil until the 1930´s, when there was a political revolution.
Did you know that the first dogfight in South America was on August 8, 1932?
The police high command ordered João Busse to return immediately, without respect to the conditions. He began the flight with the faulty engine. Close to the border of São Paulo to Paraná, he had to make an emergency landing because of engine trouble. He crashed and both he and the mechanic were killed. He is the "patrono," the symbol of the police aviator.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
via email from Eduardo Sigaud, 11-8-05
Hi,
I am a movie maker and have just finished a documentary called ASAS DE CURITIBA (Wings of Curitiba). Curitiba is the capital of the state of Parana, in the south of Brazil.
In 1918, Luiz Bergman, an aviator from Rio de Janeiro, joined the group of sergeants of the Força Policial do Paraná, (Police Force of Paraná). They iniciated a campaign to raise money to buy an airplane.
One year later they bought a Morane Borel biplane, but with only one restriction, Bergman must be the first to fly it. A Rio de Janeiro newspaper said the Borel was too dangerous to fly, so Bergman made a tour to prove the opposite. The route was from Curitiba to Ponta Grossa, Castro and Jaguariaiva, an almost 500 km journey. He and his observer, Lieut. João Busse, finished the tour in about a week. While in the cities, Bergman flew with VIP girls. The adventure was one of the first attempts to put Curitiba on the map of aviation in Brazil.
I have some photos of early Brazilian aviators, including a task force in WWI.
Congratulations for your work on his homepage.
Regards,
Eduardo Sigaud

Minha família, minha maior alegria.
If you are seeking basic information on Joáo Busse, this is a wonderful resource. Douglas has assembled a Busse Family Tree of impressive dimension. The family roots go back to Prussia in 1806 and extend to descendants currently living in Brazil. Just a short distance down from the top of the page you will find portraits of both parents and just below a beautiful picture in which the seven brothers of their ten children are pictured, including Joáo. About halfway down the page, at reference No. 6.0, you will find the entry for Joáo Alexandre Busse, the son of João Henrique Busse and Maria do Carmo de Matos Busse.

Anésia Pinheiro Machado
This pioneer aviatrix was inspired to learn how to fly by her meeting with João Busse. On this page, which offers a comprehensive revue of her career, is found the following reference to capitão João Busse.

In the following year, it it still more consolidated its desire of if becoming aviator. Captain João Busse, of the Police Force of the Paraná, took a Caudron G-3 of São Paulo for Curitiba. The aircraft presented problems, what it compelled the pilot to make a landing in Itapetininga, city of the region, where Anésia lived at the time. Thus that it knew, it was for the place of the landing and stopped friendship with the pilot who worked in the repair of the airplane. Ahead of the determination of the young, then with 17 years, it lieutenant Reynaldo Gonçalves wrote a ticket recommending it it, aviator of the Public Force of São Paulo.
