Editors Note: It becomes obvious to even the amateur aviation historian, like myself, that many of the pioneer flyers were not members of the Early Bird organization. Even those who soloed before the cutoff date, December 17, 1916 and were otherwise eligible, were either overlooked as candidates or didn't bother to apply. Nevertheless, I think they deserve our attention if we are to understand and appreciate the roles they played in the development of aviation. To that end, I hope to add a few to this page as time and opportunity permits.

HISTORY OF FLIGHT TIMELINE
Introductory Notes from Kimberly Grant
"It is fully understood that many nations gave birth to aviation pioneers. Early in the planning process for this Web site, it was decided to have participation from the International Council of Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS), and to have each ICAS country identify their own pioneers. The following notable figures are but a very few examples of those who could be considered. If you feel your country is not represented and you have the history to share, please contact Kimberly Grant at kimg@aiaa.org ."
You will find interesting summaries of the history of aviation in each of the following countries.
Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweded, United Kingdom and United States.

This wonderful website is particularly helpful in understanding the the early days of aviation in Argentina. It recounts the establishment of the first airport in Argentina and contains references to many of the pioneer aviators of the era. The primary website is written in Spanish, but with the kind permission of the author, Sr. Hernando Mankus, I have been permitted to make a translation into English, as best I can, which can be accessed by clicking on:

If you can read Spanish, I highly recommend that you refer to the original article. You can access it by clicking on the title above.

BRAZILIAN PIONEERS
Pioneiros do Ar
Pioneers of the Air
If you read Portuguese, you can click on the title above and take full advantage of this new site. You will have access to the stories of some 24 early aviators, most of them Brazilian, although even the Wright Brothers are included. There are also several other sections, such as Stories, Images, Partners, Links and Events, all of interest to the aviation buff.
If you need an English translation, it is a little more difficult. What I do is to click on the "Os Pioneiros" button at the top left of the page, and then "choose an aviator, for example "Edu Chaves" Then, I block out and copy the text. Next, I go to AltaVista's Babel Fish translation site:

Babelfish

Once there, I paste the text into the box, set the machine to translate Portuguese to English, push the button and read the translated text in the box. It is a little awkward, but if you are interested, it is well worth the effort.

QUEBEC AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM
"Fondation Aerovision Quebec was created to generate an awareness of the exceptional contribution of Quebec to the conquest of the air. This was to be achieved by fostering the implementation of the Québec Air and Space Museum, at the Saint-Hubert airport (near Montréal, Canada), which would be devoted to the preservation of the aeronautical heritage of Quebec, as well as that of the pioneers and heroes of our aviation history."
You will find that a visit to this site is a good place to start your study of Canadian aviation. You may choose from either a French or English version. On the menu you will find sections devoted to Foundation, Museum, History 1, History 2, What's New, Shop, Email and Links. You will find biographies of several pioneers which are not yet available on my website. You can access the site by clicking on the title above.

This series of messages, which were posted on the Romanian Military History Forum of the www.worldwar2.ro website by "Florin" in September, 2004, are a rich source of information, both stories and photographs. You will find numerous original photographs and newsclippings which Florin has translated from the Romanian for us. Included are many familiar names of Romanian pioneers, as well as several who are otherwise relatively unknown. Any student of the development of aviation in Romania will find this to be an especially valuable resource. You can access the series by clicking on the title above.

If you read French, you can take full advantage of this monumental resource which offers a comprehensive revue of Swiss aviation from its beginnings in 1783 to the present. The authors, Jean-Claude Cailliez and Stéphane Boos, by virtue of their vision and industry, have managed to assemble the definitive source of information on the events, the aviators and the air vehicles from balloons through the airplanes to the rockets. Each of the sections is replete with many comprehensive articles, most with numerous important and rare photographs. You can access the page by clicking on the title above.
